Like the organization itself, Overtones! is a member-driven publication. We invite and encourage the membership to contribute to the publication. All submissions are welcome. See the ad rates page for information concerning ad placement. Please send all materials via e-mail to: worldflutes@AOL.COM

The World Flute Society celebrates the musical and cultural expressions of the world’s indigenous and folk flute traditions. Therefore, Overtones! embraces all cultures and flute traditions in its content. Here are a

few examples of indigenous and folk flutes, although there are many more throughout the world. This is

just a sampling: 

Native American flute; eagle bone whistles; Japanese shakuhachi, shinobue, nohkan, and ryuteki; North Indian bansuri; South Indian venu; Middle Eastern ney; nose flutes; Irish flutes and whistles; South American kena, siku, and zampoña; Chinese xun, dizi, koudi, and xiao; ocarinas; Brazilian moseño; Balkan kaval; Korean daegeum, tongso, and danso; Slovakian fujara, koncovka, pistalka, and dvojacka; Thai khlui; Norwegian seljefløyte; Ghanaian atenteben; Cambodian khloy; Vietnamese sáo trúc; Ethiopian washint; Madagascan sodina; Armenian sring; Filipino palendag; Indonesian suling; Mongolian tsuur; and Andean tarka.

Publication Goals and Objectives

*The creation of a publication that is relevant and informative to all levels of indigenous and folk flutists, as well as to those who have any level of interest in these types of flutes, regardless of playing ability, music background, heritage, experience, or perspective

*To engage and invite member participation and contribution with regard to all aspects of the quarterly publication, thereby helping to produce a positive, qualitative, and effective information resource

​

*To create a publication that respects all world flute perspectives; adaptions, combinations, and

modifications; organological research; performance practice; crossover creations; and all indigenous and

folk flute traditions, with respect to historical, contemporary, and cross-cultural approaches and

innovations

​

*To provide an accessible outlet for members to announce events, recently-released recordings, projects, awards and/or honors, written music, flute-related articles, poems, questions, CD and DVD reviews, book reviews, place fee-based advertisements, and similar submissions

​

* To research and study how world flutes are utilized, constructed, played, and tuned within their own cultures; to explore the origins, mythology, and folklore of the world’s flute traditions; to detail, examine,

and illuminate how flutes from differing cultures interact with each other culturally and musically; to

examine how flutes have adapted and learned from other cultures’ flute traditions, construction techniques, tuning systems, and performance practice; to examine and communicate information about other world instruments that are used in conjunction with world flutes in performance and recording

Each member of the World Flute Society will receive four issues of Overtones! as part of their

one-year membership.
